Tickets for Highclere Castle’s Summer 2018 season have just been released. This is a rare and exclusive opportunity to visit the “real Downton Abbey”, the stunning residence of Earl and Countess Carnavon, in our Discover Highclere Castle experience, which includes a signed copy of the latest book by the Countess, an overnight stay for two at a nearby 17th century countryside inn, a delicious dinner and a cooked breakfast the next morning. After a hearty breakfast, make your way to Highclere Castle — home to the Carnarvon family since 1679 — which is less than three miles from The Yew Tree. Your ticket gives you access to the castle and gardens, as well as the Egyptian Exhibition housed in the cellars. Inside the castle, which was designed by Sir Charles Barry in 1842, you will find gorgeous state rooms resplendent with rich silks, baroque ceilings and magnificent paintings. In the late nineteenth century it was a hive of political life and later encapsulated the glamour of Britain’s Edwardian period. Downstairs you can marvel at a fascinating exhibition of Egyptian antiquities and treasures collected by the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, who famously financed the search for the tomb of Tutankhamen in 1922 and discovered it with his archaeological colleague Howard Carter. After exploring the castle, there is much to enjoy in the extensive gardens and woodlands surrounding the castle. This includes the decorative Monks’ Garden, the White Border, The Secret Garden and the Wood of Goodwill, which features an avenue of walnut trees, a rose arbour, camomile lawn and wildflower meadow. READ THE INSIDE STORY Your package also includes a copy of At Home at Highclere by Lady Carnavon and signed by the author. This entertaining book is a mine of family records going back some 300 years. Lady Carnarvon has delved into the archives to create a book that invites you inside the Castle, past and present. A paperback edition of Lady Carnavon’s earlier book, Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey: The Lost Legacy of Highclere Castle, is also included.
